The Miami Dolphins were without five coaches against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday after an assistant coach tested positive for coronavirus, while Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield is among the players currently on the reserve/COVID-19 list. By Sky Sports NFLLast Updated: 09/11/20 6:22pm Peter King believes the NFL might introduce an eighth playoff spot in each conference as they are worried that a team that has played all their games might miss out on a playoff spot to one that has missed games due to Covid 4:19 A look back at the action and talking points from Week 9 of the NFL season 5:45 Highlights of the Green Bay Packers against the San Francisco 49ers from Week 9 of the NFL – Advertisement – – Advertisement – – Advertisement – Peter King believes the NFL might introduce an eighth playoff spot in each conference as they are worried that a team that has played all their games might miss out on a playoff spot to one that has missed games due to Covid NFL team owners are expected to discuss the possibility of expanding the 2020 playoffs to eight teams per conference when they meet virtually on Tuesday. With the league officially into the second half of the season, 22 bye weeks have been used while just 10 remain. That means less freedom to reschedule games as done so amid the Tennessee Titans’ COVID-19 outbreak, as well as further questions over the prospect of introducing a Week 18.“You’re either going to have to say to that couple of teams ‘you’re not playing 16 games’ or ‘we’re going to invent a Week 18′,” NBC Sports’ Peter King told Sky Sports, discussing the NFL’s options in the event of another outbreak.“They’re going to vote on giving the power to Roger Goodell to essentially allow him to say at some point in the rest of the year ‘we will have eight playoff teams per conference instead of seven’.“I asked somebody in the league why that was so important. Imagine that the seventh seed in one of the conferences goes 9-6 and their winning percentage at 9-6 having not played one game is better than a team that would be the eighth seed at 9-7, and so the NFL I think just fears making one team miss out on the playoffs because it played its full schedule while another team didn’t.” 6:49 Highlights as the New Orleans Saints overwhelmed the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 38-3 on Sunday Attempting to replicate the NBA/WNBA style bubble has been an ongoing debate since the summer, with the numerical difference in travelling parties one of the main logistical issues. While it may not be realistic during the regular season, King believes it is possible playoff teams will create their own bubble environment during the postseason month.“The Saints are basically trying to convince the league to go into a hotel, in your home town for the playoffs and don’t allow anybody else in there,” said King.“I’ve been to New Orleans 30, 40 times in my life and I can just tell you that if the New Orleans Saints walk into the hotel and say ‘hey we need your hotel for the next month’, they’re not going to even ask any questions. ‘Anything for the Saints!’“That’s what Sean Payton has been almost religious zealot in telling people around the league ‘you’ve got to do this, you’ve got to do this’.“They had about 135 players and staff out of approximately 170 go into their little training camp bubble and they didn’t have any positive tests so they want to do that. They’re definitely going to do that if they make the post-season. I think every other team in the league should.”Sky Sports NFL is your dedicated channel for NFL coverage through the season – featuring a host of NFL Network programming, a new weekly preview show as well as at least five games a week and NFL Redzone, you won’t miss a moment. Don’t forget to follow us on skysports.com/nfl, our Twitter account @SkySportsNFL & Sky Sports – on the go! Highlights of the Green Bay Packers against the San Francisco 49ers from Week 9 of the NFL Half of the league’s 32 teams had at least one case of coronavirus as of Friday morning.King continued: “You have to ask yourself the question, what should cause a game to be postponed and what should make the NFL play a Week 18?“As much as you say, ‘well maybe Miami shouldn’t have played because of these five coaches’, I would make this point. They’ve got eight more weeks to go and they might have a situation where down the road they’re going to have 10 players out one week.“This thing that is basically racing across the country, it’s unforgiving. And that’s why I think you saw the NFL push to play the 49ers on Thursday night. Everybody said ‘well maybe they could have played Sunday or Monday’. A look back at the action and talking points from Week 9 of the NFL season The San Francisco 49ers closed their facility on Wednesday after wide receiver Kendrick Bourne tested positive, resulting in receivers Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel and offensive tackle Trent Williams joining him on the reserve/COVID-19 list as ‘close contacts’.Head coach Kyle Shanahan was also consequently left with limited options on offense as the NFL went ahead with Thursday night’s clash between the 49ers and the Green Bay Packers.Friday’s league-wide testing then returned 15 positive cases among players, coaches and other team personnel, with the Miami Dolphins and Atlanta Falcons entering intensive protocols.Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford was cleared to play Sunday after spending last week on the reserve/COVID-19 list, before Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield landed on the reserve/COVID-19 list as a ‘close contact’, with the Browns on a bye.The Dolphins were meanwhile without quarterbacks coach Robby Brown, defensive line coach Marion Hobby, defensive backs coach Gerald Alexander, outside linebackers coach Austin Clark and quality control coach Kolby Smith for the game against the Arizona Cardinals after learning an assistant coach had tested positive earlier in the week. 5:46 Highlights as the New Orleans Saints overwhelmed the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 38-3 on Sunday – Advertisement –

Investors were expecting Moderna‘s vaccine to be highly effective after Pfizer, another frontrunner in the Covid-19 vaccine, said last week that its vaccine was more than 90% effective. Moderna’s candidate, like that of the Pfizer-BioNTech partnership, is using messenger RNA, or mRNA, technology. It’s a new approach to vaccines that uses genetic material to provoke an immune response.Moderna said Monday its vaccine remains stable at 36 to 46 degrees Fahrenheit, the temperature of a standard home or medical refrigerator, for up to 30 days. It can be stored for up to six months at negative 4 degrees Fahrenheit. By comparison, Pfizer’s vaccine requires a storage temperature of minus 94 degrees Fahrenheit.Moderna told investors on Oct. 29 that it was “actively preparing” for the global launch of its potential vaccine after completing enrollment in its trial a week earlier. It said about 37% of the participants were from minority communities and 42% had other conditions or ages that put them at high risk of severe disease. Males outnumber females in the trial by 53% to 47%.Out of the 95 Covid-19 cases, 20 participants identified as being from “diverse” communities, including 12 Hispanic people, four African Americans, three Asian Americans and one multiracial.Moderna said it plans to apply for emergency use authorization with the Food and Drug Administration in “the coming weeks.” The trial will continue to accrue additional data relevant to safety and efficacy even after an application is submitted, the company said.By the end of the year, Moderna expects to have approximately 20 million doses of the vaccine ready to ship in the U.S., the company said. It said it remains on track to manufacture 500 million to 1 billion doses globally in 2021.The company already has supply agreements in North America, the Middle East and in other regions of the world. It announced in August that it had reached a deal with the U.S. government to supply 100 million doses of its vaccine. The deal gives the federal government the option to purchase up to 400 million additional doses. The U.S. had already invested $955 million in Moderna’s Covid-19 vaccine development, bringing its total investment up to $2.48 billion, the company said at the time.In August, Moderna said it was charging between $32 and $37 per dose for its vaccine for some customers, under cheaper “pandemic pricing.” The company said it was in discussion for larger volume agreements that will have a lower price. This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.–CNBC’s Meg Tirrell contributed to this report. Shares of the company jumped by more than 11% in premarket trading. The announcement follows on the heels of similar news last week from Pfizer’s late-stage Covid-19 vaccine trial as pharmaceutical companies across the world race against the clock to find ways to prevent the virus, which has spread to more than 54.4 million people, killing more than 1.3 million.“This is a pivotal moment in the development of our COVID-19 vaccine candidate,” Moderna CEO Stephane Bancel said in a statement. “Since early January, we have chased this virus with the intent to protect as many people around the world as possible. All along, we have known that each day matters. This positive interim analysis from our Phase 3 study has given us the first clinical validation that our vaccine can prevent COVID-19 disease, including severe disease.”- Advertisement – Moderna said preliminary phase three trial data show its coronavirus vaccine is more than 94% effective in preventing Covid-19 — a result CEO Stephane Bancel called a “game-changer.”The analysis evaluated 95 confirmed Covid-19 infections among the trial’s 30,000 participants. Moderna, which developed its vaccine in collaboration with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said 90 cases of Covid-19 were observed in the placebo group versus 5 cases observed in the group that received its two-dose vaccine. That resulted in an estimated vaccine efficacy of 94.5%, it said.- Advertisement – The Cambridge, Massachusetts-based company also said there were no “significant” safety concerns, adding the vaccine was generally safe and well-tolerated with the majority of adverse events in participants being labeled as mild or moderate. Side effects included pain at the injection site and, after the second dose, fatigue, muscle pain and headaches.“Knowing that we have a vaccine that would help more people who would take it is just a wonderful feeling,” Bancel said in an interview with CNBC. “As you know a lot of people have been reluctant in surveys to take a vaccine because I think we’re worried about the politicization of a vaccine, they’re worried about what you get with a flu shot you know 50% to 60% efficacy.”With an efficacy rate of 95%, “that’s a game-changer, I believe,” he said.- Advertisement – – Advertisement –
Investigators determined that 26 illness cases from August 2005 through June 2006 were caused by the same strain of Salmonella enterica serotype Enteritidis, according to the release. The same strain was found in product that people still had in their freezers, said Dr. Kirk Smith, supervisor of the Foodborne Disease Unit in the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH). “The frozen chicken entrees in these outbreaks are breaded, pre-browned and individually wrapped, so it’s likely most ill consumers mistakenly assumed they have been precooked,” said Kevin Elfering, dairy and food inspection director in the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA), in a news release. He said people probably overlooked label instructions to fully cook the raw entrees and just heated them in a microwave. Although the kinds of products tied to these outbreaks are labeled as microwaveable, Minnesota officials warned not to cook them that way. “Microwaves vary in strength and tend to cook products unevenly; therefore, they are not appropriate for the primary preparation of raw meat and poultry,” the news release states. Salmonellosis symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal pain and cramps, and fever. They usually begin within 12 to 72 hours of exposure and subside within 5 to 7 days, but about 20% of cases require hospitalization, the MDH said. The other three illness cases were S Typhimurium infections with a DNA fingerprint that matched that of product in patients’ homes, Smith said. These cases prompted the USDA to issue a consumer advisory on Jul 3 (see link below). The products were produced by Aspen Foods and sold under a store brand name. Minnesota officials said they decided to warn the public of the risk because the labeling change will take time and because the products probably will still be marketed as “microwaveable.” Jul 21, 2006 (CIDRAP News) In the wake of two outbreaks of Salmonella infection involving 29 cases, Minnesota health officials are warning the public to be careful when cooking frozen, pre-browned chicken entrees. Salmonella is sometimes found in raw chicken and is not considered an adulterant, making thorough cooking imperative, MDH and USDA officials said. For safety, raw poultry products must be cooked to an internal temperature of 165ºF. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced a limited recall in March in response to this outbreak, but cases have continued, the MDH said. The products mostly come from two manufacturers, Aspen Foods in Chicago (USDA plant P-1358) and Serenade Foods, Milford, Ind. (USDA plant P-2375). They are sold under various brand names, including store names. The USDA said that if one cooks the products in a microwave oven, one should use a food thermometer to check the temperature at multiple points inside the product and should wait a while after cooking to allow the heat to spread evenly throughout it. The agency said it is requiring new labels clearly stating that frozen chicken entrees contain raw chicken and must be fully cooked to 165ºF. The outbreaks prompted state health and agriculture officials yesterday to “strongly advise” people not to cook stuffed chicken entrees in microwave ovens because of the risk of uneven and incomplete cooking. See also: Apr 22, 2005, CIDRAP News story “Salmonella cases linked to frozen chicken entrees” Jul 3 FSIS news release (updated Jul 11)http://www.fsis.usda.gov/News_&_Events/NR_070306_01/index.asp In the Jul 3 advisory, the USDA said at least 34 recent salmonellosis cases across the nation have been linked to undercooked chicken entrees, in addition to the Minnesota cases.
Apr 26, 2009 (CIDRAP News) – Federal officials, speaking at a White House briefing on the swine influenza outbreak today, said the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is declaring a public health emergency, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed 9 more human cases. The new cases include 8 students from a New York City preparatory school, announced yesterday as suspected cases, and a patient from Ohio, the CDC said on its swine flu update Web page today. The Ohio Department of Health (OHD) said today that the Ohio patient is a 9-year-old who has a mild illness and is recovering at home. The new cases push the US total to 20 patients in five states. The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene said its investigation of illnesses at a Bronx daycare center so far shows no evidence of swine flu and that its surveillance system hasn’t detected an increase in influenza-like illnesses in the city. Saint Francis Preparatory School, the Queens school where the 8 New York patients are students, announced on its Web site that the school will be closed Apr 27 and 28.Calls for preparednessJohn Brennan, the president’s homeland security adviser, said an interagency body of federal officials is meeting daily to regularly update President Obama and to help coordinate the national response to the swine flu outbreak. He said Janet Napolitano, secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is the lead federal official, according to the nation’s pandemic influenza plan.Despite the involvement of many federal agencies in disease response activities, Brennan said each American has a role to play. “Clearly we all have individual responsibilities, such as good hygiene, if you’re feeling sick stay home, and using commonsense measures,” he said.Richard Besser, MD, acting CDC director, warned that the United States over time may see more severe disease emerge from the swine flu outbreak. “Viruses are unpredictable and variable over time. What we say and what we learn will change,” he said.In addition to frequent hand washing and staying home when sick, he advised people who are ill to avoid air travel and public transportation.People should start thinking of their own personal preparedness, Besser said. “They need to think about what they would do if this ramps up in their community,” he said. Closing schools if students are found to have swine flu is a smart decision, he said. “We view the public as partners.”Besser said the CDC will be releasing additional guidance later today to help communities and schools respond to additional cases. In addition, discussions are under way on the steps that would be needed to quickly produce a vaccine against this strain of swine flu.At a separate news conference, Dr. Anne Schuchat of the CDC said developing and producing a specifically matched vaccine will take several months. One possibility under discussion is to include a swine flu antigen in the next seasonal flu vaccine, noted Schuchat, director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. The new virus could replace one of the three strains in the vaccine, or it could even be added, resulting in a quadrivalent (four-strain) vaccine.Federal response stepsNapolitano said the public health emergency declaration is a routine measure that allows the federal government to free up state and local personnel and resources to respond to the outbreak. She said it also allows the government to release to states 25% of the 50 million antiviral treatment courses in the Strategic National Stockpile. The Department of Defense will also preposition its 7-million course antiviral stockpile.Napolitano said the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) is monitoring and testing the nation’s food supply for swine flu–related issues. “Everything looks fine,” she said, adding that the USDA is screening and testing livestock to monitor any developments.US Customs and Border Patrol is ensuring that employees working at its border stations have enough personal protective equipment, and the department’s agents are conducting passive surveillance among patients arriving from Mexico at US borders, Napolitano said.Passengers are being asked if they’re sick, and those that report illness are referred for further screening. Similar measures have been implemented at the Transportation Security Administration. At a separate CDC news briefing this afternoon, the CDC’s Schuchat said the agency is preparing “yellow cards” to give to travelers at airports. The cards will contain information about signs and symptoms suggesting possible swine flu.Unpredictability stressedSchuchat stressed the unpredictability and fluidity of the swine flu situation. “We do think this virus is spreading from person to person, and we’re taking steps aggressively to try to slow the spread,” she said. “We are expecting things to change, and we want you to expect change as well.”In response to questions, she said it is “premature” to conclude that the disease in Mexico is different from the one in the United States, even though Mexico has had a number of deaths. “We don’t have many infected people, and we don’t have great information yet,” she said. Though the United States has had no deaths attributed to the virus yet, “I do fear that we will have deaths here,” she added. In response to a question, Schuchat said the CDC believes that “person to person to person” (tertiary) transmission is going on. But the agency has not yet estimated how many additional cases can be expected to result from each case. She said some of the US cases have involved US residents who traveled to Mexico, but she wasn’t sure how many. The two case-patients in Kansas are a married couple, one of whom got sick after a trip to Mexico, and the spouse became ill 2 days later. In reiterating CDC advice about self-protective steps people can take, Schuchat said, “If you’re having symptoms after a trip to Mexico, that’s a good time to go to the doctor and get tested.” Symptoms that may suggest swine flu include a high fever, muscle aches, cough, sore throat, and possibly vomiting and diarrhea—though these could indicate many other possibilities as well, she noted. She repeated earlier CDC assessments that the H1N1 strain in the seasonal flu vaccine is unlikely to offer protection against the new swine H1N1 strain. From the latest tests, “it doesn’t look like there are cross-reacting antibodies from seasonal H1N1 to this particular strain,” she said.Commenting on the age distribution of swine flu cases, Schuchat said US patients range from about 7 years to 54 years. In Mexico, “What we know so far is that many of the patients are in their 20s, 30s, and 40s, but we’re still lining up information about which have an illness actually caused by this virus.” Tests have shown that some of the sick people in Mexico actually had a seasonal flu virus, she said.Though it appears there have been few if any swine flu cases in older people, “It’s really too soon for us to conclude that older persons are spared,” Schuchat said.International developmentsElsewhere, two Canadian provinces today reported a total of 6 confirmed swine flu cases, according to reports from Canwest News Service and Reuters. Nova Scotia health officials said that 2 of its 4 confirmed cases were students attending the same private school who recently visited Mexico. Robert Strang, Nova Scotia’s chief public health officer, said the patients’ illnesses were mild.In British Columbia, a spokesman for the province’s Centre for Disease Control told Reuters today that officials have confirmed 2 cases.Israel’s health ministry today reported its first swine flu case, in a man who had recently traveled to Mexico and returned with influenza symptoms, Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) reported. He is hospitalized and is in isolation, the report said.According to media reports, health authorities in several countries, including France, Spain, and New Zealand, are testing several travelers who reported flu-like symptoms after traveling to Mexico.Mexican officials have closed schools through May 6, though many schools were closed anyway during the lead-up to the Cinco de Mayo holiday. The US Embassy in Mexico City has suspended all visa and nonessential citizen services from Apr 27 until Apr 30 as a precautionary measure to protect clients and staff, according to an Apr 25 State Department warden message.See also:Apr 26 NYC Department of Health press releaseSaint Francis Preparatory school Web siteApr 26 Ohio Department of Health press releaseApr 25 State Department warden messageCDC swine flu investigation pageCDC swine flu information
